“This was my first real ‘solo’ album. Of course the first few Porcupine Tree albums were solo, and Bass Communion and IEM are solo projects, but this was the first under my own name. I started exploring my influences from new wave, post-punk music, and labels like 4AD. Stuff like Cocteau Twins, Wire, Joy Division, and The Cure. In many ways Insurgentes was the most fun I had making a record because being the first album under my own name there were no expectations about what it should / shouldn’t be. I didn’t want to go back to being in a band afterwards. In a way it’s also unique in my catalogue, as I moved towards a more traditional progressive rock sound with my next few albums.” – Steven Wilson
