This project developed out of Steven’s interest in experimental music from the sixties, seventies and beyond, most especially focused on krautrock and the cosmic jazz of artists like Sun Ra. The project is almost entirely instrumental and largely improvised. Three albums and an EP were issued between 1996-2001.  The project is now discontinued with all albums out of print, but the complete IEM recordings can be downloaded from Burning Shed.

The third IEM album mostly uses improvisations from 1999 as source material, heavily reconstructed and overdubbed in the studio in August 2001. The exception is track 6 which is a piece for hammered dulcimer and mellotron choir.
